Concerning Unknown Women is a work of neither fact nor fiction, but something in between. Though the portraits in this collection are AI-generated images, they’re rooted in real women documented in the Park Abbey’s historical records.
This website is designed to function as a contemporary speculative archive—a space in which these women are encountered as people rather than records. This framing is intentional and central to the project's argument.
The project is part of Threading Landscapes, an exhibition curated by Ana Sokoloff, María Inés Rodríguez and Katia García-Anton and taking place from October 2026 through March 2027.
Visitors to the physical installation during the length of the exhibition are invited to engage with the primary sources and research materials on display, which make the project's methods explicit. The installation is conceived as a living research environment.
After the exhibition’s close, this website lives on, creating an ongoing space for reflection and engagement.

The Location
Park Abbey (Abdij van 't Park) is a Norbertine abbey founded in 1129 on the outskirts of Leuven. One of the oldest continuously inhabited monasteries in Belgium, it houses extensive archives documenting religious and civic life across nine centuries.
The archives of Park Abbey include records of the women who entered the associated religious house. It is from these records that the women in this collection are drawn.
